Bathroom Planning Checklist
A practical guide to help you prepare for your bathroom project. Know what to measure, what to avoid, and what can wait.
What to Measure
- Overall room dimensions (length, width, height)
- Window position, size, and sill height
- Door position, swing direction, and width
- Existing plumbing locations (soil pipe, water supply)
- Radiator or towel rail position
- Any fixed features (boiler, airing cupboard, structural beams)
Tip: Photos are incredibly helpful. Take pictures of the room from multiple angles, plus close-ups of plumbing connections and any problem areas.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting door swing clearance
Doors need space to open fully without hitting fixtures. Mark the door arc on your plan.
Ignoring plumbing constraints
Moving the toilet far from the soil pipe can be expensive. Consider existing plumbing positions.
Underestimating storage needs
Think about where toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies will live.
Choosing style over function
A beautiful freestanding bath might not suit a small bathroom used by a busy family.
Not considering ventilation
Bathrooms need proper extraction to prevent damp. Plan for an extractor fan if there is no window.

Focus on layout first. Finishes can be decided once the plan is confirmed.
Know your rough style preference, but specific models can come later.
